Description
This fascinating documentary photograph captures members of London’s Pearly Kings and Queens, part of a unique and historic working-class tradition that dates back to the late 19th century.
The Pearly Kings and Queens are famous for their distinctive clothing decorated with hundreds of pearl buttons, symbolising community pride, charity work, and London’s rich social history. Originating from the costermonger communities of Victorian London, the tradition was formalised by Henry Croft, who used decorated clothing to attract attention while raising money for charitable causes.
This image captures a lively street scene, showing the colourful costume, ceremonial bicycle, and gathering of people observing this important cultural tradition. The photograph provides an authentic visual record of London’s social heritage and working-class identity.
The Pearly tradition continues today, representing generosity, resilience, and community spirit in London. This photograph preserves a moment in that living history.
